DAB Radio

The Future of Radio.

The government is keen to switch to digital radio, as it will open up much more space on the airwaves and offer better choice for you, the listener. The plan is for all UK national radio stations and most local/regional stations to switch to DAB.

At the moment, there isn't a definite date set for the digital radio switchover - however, the industry is aiming for around 2015. The government has said that three targets must be met before a date is set:

• National digital radio must match FM coverage (currently 98%)
• Local digital radio must reach 90% of the population and all major roads
• 50% of radio listening must be on digital radio platforms

Once these targets are reached, the switchover will happen in no less than 2 years, giving people plenty of time to prepare.

What Is DAB

DAB is short for Digital Audio Broadcasting, DAB the new way of broadcasting radio.

DAB has dramatic advantages over conventional radio. DAB takes up less space on the airwaves, so there is room for lots of exciting new stations and old favourites, such as BBC Radio 5 live and BBC World Service, which have only been available previously in poor quality on AM.

Wider choice of stations - In addition to your current favourites, you will be able to listen to a massive selection of digital stations like BBC 6Music, BBC 1Xtra, talkSPORT and Planet Rock to name a few.

So, with DAB you can listen to your old favourites in High Quality or listen to something new!
